My name is Nicky and I’m a Postpartum Doula and a certified Antenatal Teacher

Over 20 years ago my career began in the most unexpected way. When I was 21 my niece was born. I may not have known it at the time, but her birth was to be the start of my journey to where I am today.

Helping my sister with her first baby unearthed something within. I found I had an instinct and ability to respond to both my niece and my sisters’ needs. I wasn’t sure what it all meant; all I knew was that there was something inside me that knew how to respond to them.

My natural ability to read babies was the first step in me embarking in a career of nannying in south Dublin, yet I always felt there was more I could bring to my role. Over the years as I worked with new families as a nanny, I began to realise that the parents needed my support too. My role evolved and merged into caring, nurturing , supporting, empowering both the parents and their babies. I noticed how my role became educational too. It was then I had the ah-ha moment and knew what that inner voice was telling me. So, I furthered my training to get a diploma in Antenatal Education and qualify as a Postpartum Doula too.

As a mother of two, I know that having a baby is one of the most beautiful and disruptive times in a parent’s life. As a Doula, I am there for both the sweetest moments and the most difficult ones too.

I batch cook homemade family favourite meals, sort the laundry, support a new mother with evidence-based information on breastfeeding, baby care, postpartum care, and I also Listen.
Giving mothers and their partners an opportunity to debrief and reflect on their birth in a safe, confidential space without judgement, interruption or feeling rushed. I also use my intuition to help me respond to both the baby’s needs and their parents too. And I empower parents to listen to their own gut instincts, because they know their bodies and baby’s more than anyone else.

I hold a diploma in Antenatal Education, am a trained Postpartum Doula, and I am trained by and volunteered with Cuidiu. But the most important training I’ve had is all that I have learnt from the families I have worked with throughout the years. That’s the kind of experience that can’t be bought.

I live in Westmeath with my two children, husband, dog, and cat. I love all animals so much, that I got married in Dublin Zoo. I am also a trained photographer. My hobbies include cooking, doing anything creative and writing, especially poetry. Before I had children I travelled across South America and spent my summers working in Greece.
