Join The DAI
The Doula Association of Ireland (DAI) is the country’s largest representative body which works to support and develop the doula profession. Joining the Association is a big step for any professional doula in Ireland!
Membership with a professional association allows you to enhance your career in several ways, such as increasing your access to resources, building your network and CV, generating business leads, and increasing the visibility of your work.
The DAI is a community of active doulas who are professionally trained by pre-approved institutions, Garda vetted, and insured to perform their work.
Web Profile & Access
You will have a designated page on our website, found via our Find a Doula feature. On this page, you can add a headshot, bio, state special interests and additional skills, describe the areas/hospitals you cover, and leave your detailed contact info. You will also have access to a private area of our website where you will find helpful documents, such as a sample contract, and our data collection forms.
The DAI holds its own workshops and Continuing Professional Development events, usually held in February and September, where we get to sharpen our existing skills, acquire some new ones, and exchange thoughts and ideas with other professionals.
Doulas are very intentional about all learning opportunities, often debriefing with each other following their work with clients –a practice we strongly encourage! To facilitate and formalise such interactions, the DAI has developed a Mentorship Programme, where more experienced doulas assist newer ones in establishing their businesses, practising much-needed self-care for doulas, and getting the most out of their DAI memberships.
A lot of informal discussions happen there! It is not a requirement to join, but it can be an easy way to be in touch with our body of members, ask questions, and get to know other doulas and what they have been up to.
Join us as we dive into important reads and great discussions! The DAI Book Club is a new feature and we intend to read a mix of the latest and most exciting finds as well as some of the classics of the birth industry.
As a member, you will also enjoy exclusive discounts at local and on-line services aimed at making our lives easier, helping us enhance our businesses, and allowing us to recharge. Current partners include Nurture Health and BGi Insurance.
Code of Ethics
In joining the Doula Association of Ireland, prospective members agree to abide by our code of ethics. Please ensure that you have read these terms and are happy to incorporate them in your work before submitting your application form.
Personal Indemnity Insurance
We require all working members to have an active insurance policy. You are encouraged to choose the insurance company of your preference, but the DAI has recently secured an exclusive 10% discount with BGi Insurance in the UK.
Garda vetting is a requirement in Ireland for all of those working with children and/or vulnerable persons, which applies to our work as doulas. The DAI has secured an agreement with the Garda Vetting authority to have all members vetted, whether or not they have been vetted by a different organisation/company. Our Garda Vetting officer Bairbre will streamline it all for you. Easy peasy!
The DAI requires that prospective members complete a pre-approved training course. There are several different types of training on offer, but the DAI recommends one which involves active learning, hands-on practice, formal instruction, and group dynamics. For in-depth information regarding recommended curriculum and approved trainings, please visit our Become a Doula page.
Ready to join the DAI?
We are open to new memberships year round, so you may join the DAI at the time most convenient to you! To apply, you must fill out our application form and submit it along with the required documentation. We recommend that you read the Application Instructions before starting the application process.
All membership applications will be reviewed by the DAI Committee and processed by our Membership Secretary.
Once processed, the applicant shall be notified of our decision and, if applicable, the relevant membership fees may be paid. When payment is complete membership will be made official.
What Members Say
“I love being a member of the DAI because doula work is solitary and can be lonely at times and the DAI is my team. The support and camaraderie is invaluable. Regular get togethers and phone calls to share stories and good news but also to debrief and counsel where necessary. Laughter, tears, love, despair, frustration, excitement and CAKE are all part of our meets at the DAI!”
